Original Pigmentation on Cork Paintings
“Contemplation” is one of the most highly developed examples from a series of paintings in this medium that Jamali did in the early ‘90’s. The figure appears over and over in this period, usually in smaller formats, but always mysterious, evocative and mystical. I chose this work because of the immensely rich color and texture and the exuberance of the figure’s pose that, to my mind at least, is the moment of spiritual enlightenment.
In these paintings Jamali applied pure pigments to natural cork and paper. He creates a kind of negative surface, exploiting the cork's readiness to absorb and resist pigment. This technique was an important contribution to the early development of textural and painterly surfaces in Jamali's signature Mystical Expressionist style. Email to inquire.
